The 80's

Although the show began in 1980, we didn't start having live guests until Spring of 1982. The first live guest was Gary Chapman. A week or two later was Michael Card (for his first record). Next was Amy Grant very shortly before she and Gary were married. Her father brought her in that morning. Unfortunately, I have very few pictures from those very early shows. In fact, I didn't really start taking pictures until the show moved to WLAC-FM in 1983.

Below is a portion of pictures from the 1980's... Click any picture for larger view.

Benn82.jpg (17281 bytes) I think that this is the first picture taken of a guest at a show. It's also the first time I met BOB BENNETT. This is Fall, 1982 at WSM-FM in Nashville.
NOEL PAUL STOOKEY was in town in 1985 to record a Peter, Paul, & Mary TV special. He made time for us the morning between the two tapings. Growing up, I had always heard what he would do if he "...had a hammer"... so I gave him one!
GMA Sunday, 1986 brought DeGARMO & KEY and SCOTT ROSS from CBN to the show. L-R: Eddie DeGarmo, Scott Ross, me, Dana Key.

We started our annual Christmas parties in the early 80's. This is the Reunion records gang after the 1987 party. L-R: Rich Mullins, Pam Mark Hall, Kim Hill, Heidi Brown, Leslie Tarkington, Billy Sprague, front: Carmen Mosley, me, and Melinda Scruggs.
Speaking of RICH MULLINS. He never celebrated his birthday... HE CELEBRATED HIS BIRTHDAY! In 1988, Rich came in for an interview and brought in several people. Most of these folks slept in sleeping bags on his floor. Not one of them live in Nashville. They drove all the way from as far away as Dallas, Wichita, and beyond. That's Rich behind the mic on the left.
In the 1970's, JOE ENGLISH was the drummer for Paul McCartney and Wings! Joe appeared with friends Mike and Nancy Demus and Steve Geyer.
This is probably the longest-lasting configuration of PETRA. They were in to share the new project, "Beyond Belief". L-R: Bob Hartman, Louie Weaver, me, John Lawry, John Schlitt, and Ronnie Cates down in front.
GARY CHAPMAN and AMY GRANT joined us in 1985 for the premiere of Amy's album, "Unguarded".

I emceed an Amy Grant concert in 1986. Backstage I met a young lady. She told me that she had moved to Nashville to "get into the music business". I wanted to encourage her yet let her know that she definitely was NOT alone in that pursuit. She then informed me that BROWN BANNISTER was producing her project. That young lady was KIM HILL. She and Brown spent time with us premiering her debut album.

Do you remember the 60's pop group AMERICA? Here I am recording a radio special with former founding member, DAN PEEK on the release of a new album.

I remember what I was doing on the night of December 5, 1985. I emceed the DeGarmo & Key concert in Nashville at the Grand Ole Opry House. It was quite a night. Here I am with DANA KEY.
